I originally trained as a printmaker but recently painting has become
an important part of my practice. I feel that oil on canvas is better
able to communicate some of my ideas as my images are sensitive to
certain painting techniques.
The subject matter has been partly sourced from craft manuals on the
ancient activity of origami. I work with these images mainly in the
form of photographs or copies that retain a specific visual quality.
This provides me with a somewhat artificial language that I can use
to depict and mimic nature.
This can be used to evaluate the subject in relation to art history
and also explore the notion that nature and art can be exotic and
aspirational whilst also retaining something of the everyday. This
lends itself to the theory of the sublime. |
