Painting
At one time I incorporated representational images in symbolic or
iconic pictures. Recently I have been working in a more abstract way.
I am interested in colour and balance, the symbolism of shapes and
simple motifs, and the effect created by different ways of applying
paint. A number of pieces use dots, a technique similar to that of
Australian Aboriginal painting, but in my own colour range. Other
design worlds I admire include Japanese art from the Edo period and
the Book of Kells.
While I often start out with an idea, this inevitably becomes subverted
by failure and a need to rescue what has happened. I follow this process
falteringly, often undertaking major changes, until I sense I have
reached a stopping point, a point of balance. At this stage there
should be a sense of inevitability about the painting of something
sufficiently integrated to withstand being looked at.
