Constructions
Some years ago, I started to experiment with discarded wood and found
items, both natural and man-made, often from the Lune Estuary near
Lancaster and beaches in the north-west of Scotland. What attracts
me to this material is the way a commonplace and used quality is given
new life by the way the elements have worked it. I often feel that
I am not making new work so much as continuing a process already underway.
I try to achieve a balance between the intrinsic qualities of the
materials themselves and the ideas and symbols that come to mind when
I work. Sometimes these ideas are simply a response to the pieces
and their shapes and have no other significance. And some pieces are
made exclusively with material collected from a particular place on
a particular day. On other occasions I am aware of images that have
impressed me from specific experiences, places or older cultures.
Although I give a title to each work, this is simply a reflection
of my thoughts about it and is not intended to influence the way it
is seen. I am happy for viewers to make their own sense of the piece.
