One form above all stands at the centre of my work -
the so-called 'Tarkus' form. Many people have asked 'What is Tarkus?'
From one angle Tarkus is a figure, from another a machine, an animal,
an architectural structure, an ancient megalith..
On a personal level Tarkus is an old and familiar friend. On a more
universal level, Tarkus is a true symbol.
In being such, it perfectly accords with Carl Jung's incisive definition
of a symbol - on the one hand it arises from the unconscious, spontaneously,
not at the behest or design of the conscious mind - on the other hand,
within its image entire worlds of meaning are held together. |
